SMA honours Moosomin family physician Dr. Ettiene Crouse as 2025 Physician of the Year
Dr. Ettiene Crouse credits the health care team in Moosomin for his selection as the Saskatchewan Medical Association’s (SMA) 2025 Physician of the Year.
“It is a huge honour, but at the same time I feel that my colleagues are as deserving of this as I am,” Dr. Crouse said. “I feel our success in Moosomin stems from teamwork that includes our clinic and hospital staff.”
The SMA presented the Physician of the Year Award on Friday, Oct. 24, during an awards ceremony held in conjunction with the SMA’s 2025 Fall Representative Assembly in Saskatoon.
A nominator for the award says Dr. Crouse is deeply respected by colleagues and staff at the Moosomin Family Practice Centre. “His helpful and easy-going nature makes him a favourite around the office. He is absolutely the most deserving candidate for the SMA Physician of the Year. He is a very skilled family and emergency physician providing exemplary medical care to the residents of southeast Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba.”
Dr. Crouse has practiced medicine for more than 30 years, most of which as a rural family physician. Educated in South Africa, he took a locum position in the U.K. before coming to Moosomin in 1994.
Dr. Crouse provides comprehensive medical care through various medical clinics, hospital in-patient care, long term care, palliative care, obstetrics, occupational health at the local potash mine and emergency services at the Southeast Integrated Care Centre. He has trained and instructed medical students, residents and rural nursing staff, and has assessed SIPPA candidates.
“The Moosomin ER department is remarkably busy, and one never knows who may walk through our doors,” a nominator says. “Dr. Crouse handles busy call shifts with a calm manner, assessing patients quickly and efficiently. He is a team player, always willing to teach both residents and nursing staff. Patients are in good hands when Dr. Crouse is working in the emergency department. His popularity as a well-respected family physician is apparent from the long lists of patients willing to wait, or travel, to see him.”
Dr. Crouse is a longstanding SMA RA delegate, has served on the Section of Family Medicine executive, and his region’s medical association. His broad knowledge of family medicine, team building and support skills, and community work has greatly benefited his medical colleagues and his patients.
Dr. Crouse highlights the work of the health care team in Moosomin in increasing levels of patient care and access to services. “We increased surgical procedures, we started a new Community Oncology Program centre in Moosomin, we helped with planning the new Southeast Integrated Care Centre and gradually we have grown from a three-doctor clinic to a 12-doctor clinic.”
