The Saskatchewan Medical Association is a voluntary professional association for physicians in Saskatchewan, where over 90 per cent of physicians are members. The SMA also represents the vast majority of medical students and residents training in Saskatchewan.
We represent the collective view of the medical profession in Saskatchewan and negotiate for and on behalf of fee-for-service, salaried and alternate payment physicians.
We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time, permanent Communications Manager to join our growing team!
Reporting to the Executive Director, Strategic & Corporate Services, the Communications Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Communications department. This position develops and implements long- and short-term communications strategies and leads the Communications team in the execution of the strategy to meet the SMAs communication and marketing needs.
This position is based on-site in Saskatoon, SK.

At the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA), we are passionate about rural medicine. We contract locum physicians to provide relief coverage to rural physicians for periods of 4 to 14 days for practices in rural communities where there are fewer than five practising physicians.

Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on physicians’ economic welfare and help shape a high-quality, fair, and patient-centered healthcare system? Joining the SMA Economics Committee offers a unique opportunity to do just that.
As a member, you will help influence meaningful change in Saskatchewan’s healthcare system, grow as a leader within the physician community, and contribute to the strength and advocacy efforts of your Association. Your insights and expertise will help shape future compensation of fee-for-service and non-fee-for-service physicians in Saskatchewan.
You will be supported throughout the process by a dedicated team of economists, who provide analysis and strategic insight to inform committee decisions.
What We Do:
The Economics Committee;
- Develops and recommends policies on physician compensation, including fee-for-service and non-fee-for service payment models,
- Reviews and provides recommendations on changes to the physician payment schedule, and supports the allocation of negotiated funds to SMA sections – such as collaborating closely with SMA Sections, the Intersectional Council, and Board of Directors on both macro and micro allocation decisions,
- Collaborates and consults with SMA Committees, the Ministry of Health, and other key stakeholders on physician remuneration and service agreements.

- Systems and Strategic Thinkers: Understand the broader healthcare landscape and strategize how to align the evolving needs of Saskatchewan patients, physicians, and the future of medical practice with innovative compensation mechanisms,
- Relationship Builders: Foster effective professional relationships with the Ministry of Health, SMA Sections and Committees, and other relevant stakeholders,
- Decision-Makers: Demonstrate integrity, thoughtful judgment, and a commitment to making decisions that reflect the highest medical and ethical standards,
- Diverse and Inclusive: Value diversity and are committed to representing the profession in all its richness,
- Strong Communicators and Listeners: Articulate ideas clearly and engage with diverse perspectives; skills in negotiation, advocacy, and driving change are assets.

Time Commitment:
Members may serve up to two consecutive three-year terms, with four to six meetings per year (mostly virtual), with (potential) additional asynchronous work between meetings. Committee-related activity may increase during and following negotiation periods. Members are compensated for their Committee-related work in accordance with SMA policy.
