Specialized Assessment & Written Report for NP Referrals (14B)
Effective Oct. 1, 2025, family physicians /general practitioners with additional qualifications may be eligible to bill a new fee code (14B) for consulting patients referred by a nurse practitioner (NP).

Eligible Providers: FPs/GPs with additional qualifications
Entitlement: By approval only
Eligible Services: Relevant to physician additional qualifications
Application: Yes (unless special case outlined below)
Family physicians or general practitioners who have additional postgraduate training or qualifications in one or more of the following approved areas:
- GP-Anesthesia
- GP-Obstetrics
- GP-General Surgery
- Allergy
- Sports Medicine
- Addictions Medicine
- Dermatology
- Palliative Care
- Pediatric Psychiatry: GPs entitled to bill Advanced Primary Health Care for Pediatric Patients – Psychiatric Care (163B/164B)
- Chronic Pain: GPs entitled to bill Pain Clinic codes (201H–205H)
Note: 14B can only be billed for services provided on or after the entitlement approval date or Oct. 1, 2025, whichever is later. Entitlements cannot be retroactive or backdated.
14B is billable for specialized assessment and written report involving a nurse practitioner referral related to physician’s approved additional qualifications.
Service components must include:
- All visits necessary
- Pertinent history and examination
- Review of laboratory and/or other data
- Advice to patient
- Written report with recommendations to the referring nurse practitioner
- Record of service provided
Note: 14B is not billable for referrals unrelated to physician’s approved qualifications. Other fee codes may be billable instead for medically required insured services (e.g. 3B or 5B).
Physician must not be the MRP at the time of referral.
Physicians with relevant qualifications in one of the above-mentioned approved areas must submit a completed application form along with supporting documents to the SMA Tariff Committee at tariff@sma.sk.ca for consideration of approval by the MSB and the SMA.

Note: To avoid delays, please provide copies of the supporting documents along with your application.
SECP-approved physicians with qualifications listed on their public CPSS profile:
General practitioners with additional post-graduate training/qualifications listed under their CPSS profile relevant to their specialized practice and who are approved to provide coverage under the Specialist Emergency Coverage Program (SECP) will automatically be granted entitlement to bill 14B (i.e., no application required). These physicians will be notified via a letter from SMA, jointly developed with MSB.
Relevant training/qualifications are those listed under the physician’s CPSS profile under any of the following headings:
- Post graduate training
- Qualifications
- Specialty
- Field of Practice
Note: Physicians seeking entitlement approval outside of the standard SECP timelines (i.e. May and November) must follow the regular application process outlined above.
Physicians with entitlement to bill 163B/164B:
Family physicians who receive entitlement to bill 163B/164B (e.g. following successful completion of Can-REACH-SK fellowship) will automatically be granted entitlement to bill 14B (i.e., no application required). These physicians will be notified via a letter from SMA, jointly developed with MSB.
