The Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA) is dedicated to dismantling biases and discrimination experienced by medical students, residents, and physicians. Please join us for Uncovering Racism in Medicine: A Pathway Forward, a one-day Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Conference, on Sept. 22, 2023, at the Saskatoon Inn.
“We are very pleased to host the inaugural edition of the SMA EDI Conference as part of the SMA’s commitment to address systemic racism in the medical profession” explains SMA Physician Advocate, EDI, and SMA EDI Committee member Dr. Nnamdi Ndubuka. “It is our hope that at the end of the one-day conference, participants will be able to identify, describe, and integrate relevant concepts needed to eliminate racism and discrimination in the medical profession. We are optimistic that our members will have a great learning experience.”
Attendees will hear a wide range of experiences from different health care settings. The event will offer guidance, discussions and information related to EDI in medicine. Confirmed speakers include:
- Racial Gaslighting: What does it really mean? – Dr. Nnamdi Ndubuka
- Race in Healthcare – Dr. Modupe Tunde-Byass
- Be the Change: The Essential Transformation of Becoming an Anti-Racist Leader – Dr. Kannin Osei-Tutu
- Intent, Harm and Action. Understanding Bias, Discrimination and Racism in Healthcare – Dr. Saroo Sharda
- Indigenous Health Matters – Dr. Janet Tootoosis
- Storytelling as Advocacy: Listen, Write, Reflect – Dr. Saroo Sharda, EDI Workshop
- Creating Safe Workplaces: Recognizing and Challenging Microaggression and Unconscious Bias: A Look at the Experiences of Minorities – Halima Mela
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada: This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Continuing Medical Education Division, University of Saskatchewan for up to 6.5 credit hours.
The College of Family Physicians of Canada: This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Continuing Medical Education Division, University of Saskatchewan for up to 6.5 Mainpro+ credits.
Other Healthcare Professionals: Participation in this conference may be included as part of the continuing education and competence programs established by individual professional associations.
