Bonnie Brossart’s career as SMA CEO defined by leadership, relationships, and lasting impact

After more than a decade of dedicated service as CEO of the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA), Bonnie Brossart is retiring at the end of May, leaving a legacy shaped by collaboration, trust, and a deep commitment to “making the day in the life of a doctor better.”

“Eleven years ago, I was interviewed for an SMA Digest article on what inspired me to take on the role of CEO of the SMA and my priorities for the organization,” Ms. Brossart said. “I spoke about being part of creating a future in which physicians across the province are meaningfully involved, integral to designing and leading health system strategy and improvements. It feels pretty good to say that what was envisioned then is certainly a reality!”

A passionate health system leader, Ms. Brossart’s leadership, quality improvement, and research background are of considerable scope and breadth. Born and raised in Calgary, she earned degrees in economics from the University of Calgary and McMaster University, later adding a Chartered Director designation from McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business in 2025.

Her journey in Saskatchewan began in 1990 with the Ministry of Health, followed by health services research roles that laid the groundwork for her lifelong focus on health system improvement. In 2003, she joined the newly created Health Quality Council, eventually serving as CEO for seven years. She became CEO of the SMA on Jan. 5, 2015.

Under Ms. Brossart’s guidance, the SMA strengthened its voice at the provincial level and was well respected nationally. Key accomplishments included enhancements to physician wellness and workplace wellbeing programs, as well as the innovative 2022–26 Agreement that improved compensation, fairness and sustainability for physicians.

Yet colleagues say her greatest impact cannot be measured in programs or policies alone.

Ms. Brossart is widely recognized for her ability to build relationships, bringing together physicians and health system partners to find shared solutions to issues. She fostered an environment where complex conversations could move forward through listening, clarity, and mutual respect.

“Much of what the SMA has achieved over the past decade has been achieved due to building solid, respectful relationships. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to build and sustain excellent relationships with so many physicians and health system colleagues, both as CEO at the SMA and throughout my career.”

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ms. Brossart remains grounded in family and community. She and her husband Kevin have raised three sons in Saskatoon. She has been active in school, church and community life, and looks forward to spending more time at their home on Blackstrap Lake.

Ms. Brossart likes to say that while she is retiring as a CEO, she still has lots of passion and energy for working with physicians and others to help improve Saskatchewan’s health care system. She looks forward to new opportunities.
