Family medicine formally recognized as a specialty in Saskatchewan

A landmark regulatory change has formally designated family physicians as “specialists in family medicine.”

“This recognition affirms the reality of what family physicians do every day,” said Dr. Jess R. Melle, president of the Saskatchewan Medical Association’s Section of Family Medicine. “Family medicine is not ‘general.’ It is a distinct and highly specialized field of practice. Our training and certification reflect a defined body of knowledge and competence. Our role is foundational to a high-functioning, sustainable health care system.”

The bylaw amendment was enacted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan with approval from the Minister of Health. It formally recognizes physicians certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada to use the title “Specialist in Family Medicine” in their professional descriptions and communications.

The change represents years of advocacy and a growing recognition of how family medicine is understood within the health care system, Dr. Melle noted. The designation acknowledges the depth, scope, and complexity of the work of family physicians, which often involves managing complex illnesses, chronic disease, mental health, and addictions, sometimes within a single patient visit.

Dr. Melle encourages eligible physicians to begin using the new designation consistently in clinic signage, professional biographies, CVs, academic settings, and communications with patients and colleagues. He said this will strengthen professional identity, improve public understanding of family medicine, and reinforce the legitimacy of the designation.

“This is a significant and well‑earned advancement for our profession,” Dr. Melle said. “It reflects the expertise family physicians bring to patient care and the leadership role we play, while helping the public better understand the vital, complex work we do every day in communities across the province.”
