Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
The SMA supports working with nurse practitioners in formal collaborative relationships where a nurse practitioner is connected to a family physician(s).
The SMA supports direct referrals from NPs to specialists where there is a formal collaborative relationship between a nurse practitioner and a family physician(s), and protocols have been established on when a nurse practitioner can directly refer patients to a specialist. The SMA does not support nurse practitioners directly referring patients to specialists where no formal collaborative relationship with a physician(s) exists. Protocols need to be established in Saskatchewan so that every nurse practitioner always has a formal collaborative connection with a family physician(s). Every patient in Saskatchewan should be connected to a practice with at least one family physician in it. In this way, all health care practitioners can be utilized to their full scope of practice. The burden of gaining access to specialists is also reduced.
