Physician In Need

What is it?

A program to support SMA members who need assistance in responding to complaints, disciplinary proceedings, and audits by external organizations.

All matters shared by members are kept strictly confidential and will not be shared with third parties — except with the express consent of the physician. The program works in cooperation with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), but only when a physician consents to this cooperation.

Examples of situations where physicians may need assistance include:

  • Patient complaints to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS) or the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA)
  • Formal interviews with CPSS officials, CPSS Council, or any quality committee of CPSS
  • Disciplinary proceedings by either CPSS or the SHA
  • Audits by the Joint Medical Professional Review Committee
  • Other actions by the SHA
  • Formal interviews, investigations, disciplinary proceedings, or conflicts with the College of Medicine that affect medical learners review of employment, Return in Service (RIS) contracts, or both
  • Supporting and advocating on behalf of members experiencing challenging or unsupportive work environments
  • Support, education, implementation and problem resolution regarding electronic medical records (EMRs)
  • Advocacy on behalf of physicians with the Ministry of Health regarding health system changes/improvements

The Physician in Need program also provides the following assistance to SMA members:

  • Advise and support members who are in direct conflict with hospitals, coworkers, or patients on strategies to respond to conflict, provide 3rd party intervention to address issues, or both.
  • Help members prepare any written response required or advisable, act as an advocate on the member’s behalf, or accompany the member to any interview or hearing.
  • Advise members if a referral of the matter to CMPA or other legal counsel is deemed to be appropriate.
  • Report to the SMA Board matters which appear to be unfair or biased, and which may require the Board’s intervention.
