CMA seeks rep to World Medical Association

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) invites nominations and expressions of interest for the CMA representative to the World Medical Association to serve as an observer to the WMA for 2 years beginning in April 2019 and to take office as the official representative in April 2021 for a 2-year period.

Mandate of the World Medical Association

The purpose of the World Medical Association (WMA) is to “serve humanity by endeavouring to achieve the highest international standards in medical education, medical science, medical art and medical ethics, and health care for all people of the world.”  The WMA is composed of approximately 100-member national medical associations and provides a forum for its member associations to communicate freely, to cooperate actively, to achieve consensus on high standards of medical ethics and professional competence and to promote the professional freedom of physicians worldwide.

CMA’s role in international activities, including the World Medical Association, provides:

  • an international forum for exchange of ideas and common experiences
  • advocacy and outreach through an international body. CMA members look to the organization to be involved globally and nearly all our international work occurs through our representation at the WMA
  • influence and provide input into policy development which will affect CMA members (ethical international recruitment, health and the environment, pandemic planning, international telemedicine, medical care on airplanes)

Further details on the role of the CMA at the international level can be found in Appendix A.
